Ayurveda says that it is possible to remove all the traces of all the illnesses you have ever had. This is a big claim. To truly be free of an issue means that the issue has been completely digested and resolved. This takes time. Covering up symptoms is not real healing. Complete healing of an issue requires the elimination of all the underlying root causes of the issue. Often, actual healing is not linear; it can be convoluted. Quick fixes may just address symptoms, leaving root causes, so problems keep coming back. The process of healing may reveal other issues along the way.
Sometimes an issue is minor and immediate; say you had a small cut. You clean the cut, protect it while it heals, and then it is done. Maybe there is a tiny scar, or maybe not. Once it is healed, it doesn’t bother you. More complex issues require more time and effort.
For example, let’s say that a person is overweight and gets too big to fit into their clothing. If they take a weight-loss drug and are able to get back into their clothing, they may be satisfied for a while. If the weight gain stems from not drinking enough water and they continue to not drink enough water, eventually they will have any of many other problems. Maybe the person’s digestion is sluggish. Taking certain herbs may be enough to kindle the digestive fire and achieve the desired weight loss while promoting good health. On the other hand, there may be emotional issues underlying the weight gain (or other health issues). If the emotional roots are not digested, they will continue to cause problems. Meanwhile, if the person continues to have cold drinks, peanut butter, chocolate, fried foods, ice cream, soft drinks, and/or junk food, they will sooner or later have more health problems. Habits may be comfortable simply because they are familiar.
Another example might be anger issues. Some people hold their anger in and end up hurting their bodies from the inside out. One person with suppressed anger might develop gallstones, for example. Gall bladder surgery does nothing to correct the underlying cause of suppressed anger. Some people blow up in explosive rage as a result of anger. Just deciding that you are not going to blow up will not fix the problem. Emotions are more powerful than intellect. Sooner or later, a situation comes up, and boom! There comes the rage. Choosing the right techniques to clean out anger issues requires discernment and clarity.
It is possible to clear out the underlying backlog of strong emotions, e.g., anger, and the underlying root causes of intense emotions. Usually, some spiritual practices, such as meditation and yogic breathing, must be done for this to be accomplished in a reasonable time frame. Some root causes may only respond to the use of mantras. This is how the paths of yoga and ayurveda support each other. Daily routine use of spiritual practices can provide what some people perceive as nearly miraculous health benefits. Some issues can be eliminated in a number of months that modern medicine might say you are stuck with for the perceivable future and maybe the rest of your life.
Real healing of both physical and emotional issues requires persistent effort. The older or more intense the issue is, the longer the healing effort may be required. Some issues actually took years to develop and have related, nested issues. Some have said that a general rule of thumb for holistic, natural healing is that however long it takes to establish an illness, it will take half that time to remove it. For instance, if you have been smoking for a few years and have chronic throat, sinus, and/or lung issues, holistic healing may require half those years to heal the problem. With PracticalAyurveda.com and the spiritual path of complete yoga, spiritual practices of various techniques grant the possibility of healing even faster.
